How
Do I transfer files to my website?
Files must be
transferred to the web server via either FrontPage or File
Transport Protocol (FTP). If you have a PPP internet account and
need FTP software, you can download a program for either the PC
or Mac from most shareware locations. Many Internet providers
such as AOL, CompuServe, and Prodigy may have a built-in FTP
interface. Please refer to out Microsoft FrontPage FAQ for
detailed info on publishing with FrontPage.
Can
total-host recommend an FTP program?
Yes! If you are not using FrontPage, we recommend using an
excellent FTP shareware program for Windows called windows
commander and ws_ftp . You can download this program
directly from any shareware site For the Mac, we recommend
using: Fetch
How
do I get started with FTP?
The process by which files are transferred to the web server is
called "FTP" (File Transport Protocol). You have
unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create
and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload
files to your web site at your leisure.

you have a PPP internet account and need an FTP program, you can

Microsoft FrontPage Users should
use only the FrontPage publishing feature to transfer files.
Using regular FTP can corrupt the extensions, disabling the
functionality of the FrontPage web and requiring that the site
be deleted to reinstall the extensions.
What
are acceptable file names for use on Total-Host.net's Linux web
servers?
Spaces and special control characters are generally not a good
idea. The underscore character ("_") is acceptable.
You should always avoid special characters ( ! @ # $ % ^ & *
: ' ) in file names. We suggest that you keep the length of file
names to a minimum.
What
should I do if denied access via FTP?
If you are denied access AFTER entering your userid and
password, you may be using the wrong password. Please double
check the password and try it again.
If you cannot connect at all, or
connect and then "hang", there may be problems with
connectivity.
Also make sure that the startup
directory in your FTP profile (on the "startup tab" in
WS_FTP or Cute FTP) is left blank and the "Host
name/Address" is your domain name or ip address

If your domain name is new or
being transferred, it might still be propagating. This is the
process needed for the change to your domain name to filter out
to the rest of the world. It all starts with the InterNIC. A
simple test is to try to connect to your site by using the IP
address instead of the domain name. If you can connect. Your
domain name has not propagated yet and you should continue to
use the IP address for a couple of days. When you use the IP
address in place of the domain name, please do so as follows:
Always use the IP address,
